Our History

Our History

In 1944, the California Cartage Family of Companies opened for business with one truck to help the efforts in World War II. Through 4 generations of the original family, Cal Cartage has grown as a family of companies and is a leading service provider in the Supply-Chain Management industry.

In 1984, CMI hit the roads with a small arsenal of trucks. From humble beginnings, CMI has successfully become one of the largest drayage truck fleets based out of the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports. While keeping our mission and values of the company strong, we have expanded our logistics network across the United States.

CMI Today

October 1, 2017 NFI, one of North America’s largest supply chain solutions providers, acquired California Cartage and its affiliated companies, one of which is CMI. This acquisition has allowed all of our companies to expand our offerings of port drayage, transloading, deconsolidation, customs examination and warehousing solutions services. This acquisition has created the largest family-owned, vertically integrated 3PL in North America with top 10 service offerings in dedicated transportation, distribution, and drayage.

“NFI is a perfect cultural fit for the Cal Cartage family and is why we sought them out since the beginning,” said Bob Curry, Sr., Cal Cartage owner and Chairman. “Our people have built up this company over its long history, and NFI is an ideal organization to grow with and provide more opportunities for our employees, independent contractor partners, and customers.”
